Show me the money!

We all crave the successes of moving up the company ladder. However, an overriding reason for moving is that of money! That green-eyed little monster that plays havoc with our emotions when moving jobs and companies.
Many of us jump without actually preparing for a money negotiation and often find ourselves in the midst of an offer, negotiating a new salary without having considered what our expectation is and why or even worse negotiating a salary that is entirely too high.
So where does the process of salary negotiation really begin? Well, where most of us would never have thought it would - it starts with your reason for leaving.

The hate factor

So now you have decided you want to move and you really do WANT to move!!!
But hold on, before taking that move stop for a moment and identify what it is that has prompted you to make this all-important decision. Could it be one of the following reasons?
  • bad corporate culture
  • no room to grow
  • boss to young to die
  • not paid well enough
  • cubicle to small
  • board table not big enough

Whatever the reason the most important next step is to get a strategy in place. And these are the steps.

Identify the one top reason for moving

Your point of departure will be to take one of the reasons above for moving. This reason will power the rest of your strategy so make your choice carefully. You may have a few reasons and the longer the list, the greater the reason to move. A combination of reasons can be a real killer and especially when there is a human and corporate culture factor involved.

How desperate are you to move

This is vital - we all wake up on Monday feeling as if we would have preferred it was still Sunday. However, this is the time to think with a clear head. Your desperation factor will play a crucial role in your decision to move and your salary negotiation strategy.

Get out soon category

There are of course some reasons that override all other move motivators and this is the list:
  • company closing or being retrenched
  • change of ownership
  • new boss disgusting
  • changing in working hours or working circumstance

These are just a few in my "get out soon" category and generally tend to be factors that you cannot change or influence whatsoever. So get out soon!

Now that you have identified your move motivator you can move to the next stage which will be to identify the range of salary you would move for and more importantly the percentage of increase you want on top of your current strategy.  - no rocket science here!
But I will leave this for my article. Happy hunting.
